The classic shuffle lick is one of the most recognizable licks in the history of rock and roll music. It also happens to be one of the most important building blocks for playing blues and R&B rhythm guitar.
In today's exclusive lesson from Arlen Roth, the shuffle lick is explained and broken down for easy learning. Roth demonstrates how to properly utilize this classic style, working from the open positions of E, A, and D, in addition to taking it up the neck and playing in closed positions. He also explains how to properly use the left hand to dampen the strings so that the shuffle licks are played cleanly and accurately.
The shuffle licks were developed and used originally by such legendary guitarists as Jimmy Reed and Bill Doggett in the hit record "Honky Tonk," and, of course, by Chuck Berry, who was perhaps the most popular user of this technique.
