Arlen Roth's Daily Lesson: Intro to Pre-Bends

Gabriel J. Hernandez | 08.13.2008

Arlen RothOne of the most expressive techniques of soloing is the ability to do pre-bends, which refers to the bending down of a note, as opposed to the more common technique of bending up. This style is usually appliled at the start or middle of a phrase, and gives the phrasing a "crying" quality, much like the style employed by George Harrison in the song, "While My Guitar Gently Weeps."

Today's exclusive lesson from Arlen Roth deals with this very unique and advanced style of playing. Roth demonstrates how to use your fingers to develop what he calls "presets" that enable you to know just how far to bend a string silently to reach the note you're going to start at. He also looks at how players like Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page used this technique in their works, while giving you a step-by-step lesson on how to properly launch into these licks, and to eliminate unwated noise.

Overall, this is a very valuable lesson for a technique that can add an entirely new sound to your arsenal of guitar phrases and licks.
